The Musi must be developed!

It reached this stage because of the destruction being done in the name of development.

When waste management is handled well, these issues will not arise.

Eminent environmentalist Lubna Sarwat

CM Revanth Reddy has announced to clean the Musi River, which has become a care of address for pollution in Hyderabad. He announced plans to develop Musi along the Thames River in London. To know if it was possible to clean it up, we asked Lubna Sarwat, a popular environmentalist and founder and director of Environment and Wellbeing, and she replied, “Let alone the possibilities of cleaning Musi; it is now very necessary to clean it.”

She emphasised the need to protect the Musi that originates in Telangana, flows in Telangana, and ends in Telangana. She stated that the reason for this situation is the destruction being done in the name of development in Hyderabad. She explained that the polluted water meets the Musi River through the many inlets, and the waste water coming from many places, from Hussainsagar to Moosapet, meets in Musi.

While the area of GHMC is around 650 square kilometres, Hussainsagar’s catchment area is 267 square kilometers. She said that waste and polluted water from many places in the city are meeting in Musi through various inlets. Moreover, wastewater from the Hi-tec City also meets Musi. Lubna made it clear that it is not a matter of cleaning the mud; she emphasised that all the channels that are supposed to carry the rainwater are taking the sewage and waste and mixing it in the ponds. The only solution for this is to manage the waste and sewage efficiently on the spot, she stressed, adding that they have already given several reports to the government in this regard.
